Short note on transcription and translation of the tekna

The transcription and translation of the tekna was done by Dr Roselind Wan with the help of Margaret Lohong Wan.  Formulaic phrases and descriptive metaphors are the hallmark of the tekna, and we have done our best to preserve their meanings and nuances. However, we acknowledge that we may not have been able to fully capture them in their original forms and we apologize for this limitation.

More work is needed to fully appreciate and benefit from the richness of the Kayan culture and language.  The Kayan language remains under-described, and this website aims to contribute to the urgent need for its documentation and preservation.  Even more critically, the Kayan oral tradition, in particular the tekna, is slowly disappearing.
